About the Bard College Conservatory of Music
Bard Conservatory's undergraduate five-year double-degree program combines rigorous Conservatory training with a challenging and comprehensive liberal arts program. Students pursue both a bachelor of music and a bachelor of arts in a thoroughly integrated and supportive educational community at Bard. Conservatory students live, eat, and attend classes with non-Conservatory students, and are fully a part of the intellectual and social life of the College. Beginning in fall 2022, Bard Conservatory will offer a two-year Master of Music degree in Instrumental Performance through the Graduate Instrumental Arts Program (IAP). The IAP combines academic and practical studies of music, with a strong emphasis on music as a means of engaging with, and serving, the broader community beyond the campus. Through this degree program, students will develop the core value of music and musicians in service of society. In addition to these degree-granting programs, Bard Conservatory offers a non-degree granting certificate through the Advanced Performance Studies program. Applicants to the Advanced Performance Studies program must have already completed an undergraduate degree. In September 2019, renowned composer and conductor Tan Dun began his tenure as dean of Bard Conservatory.

About the US-China Music Institute at Bard College Conservatory of Music
The Bard College Conservatory of Music and its US-China Music Institute, in partnership with the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, offer a groundbreaking, undergraduate performance degree program in selected Chinese instruments, including dizi, erhu, guqin, guzheng, Chinese percussion, pipa, ruan, sheng, suona, and yangqin.
This program builds on Bard’s existing five-year music and liberal arts and sciences double-degree program to combine the professional study of traditional Chinese instruments with a Western-style, liberal arts education. Students graduate with a bachelor of music degree, majoring in the performance of a Chinese instrument, and a bachelor of arts in a field other than music. Future graduates will transform the development of Chinese music in the West and in China, not only as musicians but also as leaders and thinkers.
In addition to the Undergraduate double-degree program, Bard Conservatory offers a graduate-level Master of Arts in Chinese Music and Culture. This two-year program offers students a unique interdisciplinary approach to Chinese music studies and Chinese culture studies. The program seeks to develop a balance between music practice and academic research, and emphasizes their mutual illumination. A range of interdisciplinary course offerings will deepen students’ understanding of Chinese musical tradition and cultivate their musical skills while also providing a solid foundation in Chinese Classical and contemporary language, history, and culture. Students who complete the program will be prepared to embark on careers in various fields of China studies such as musical performance, education and academic research, and musical and media industries.
